Megan is a founding partner of SmithBarnas & Associates, Inc. She envisioned a company that provides human resources consulting and outsourcing services for small and mid-size companies within central South Georgia and parts of Florida. SmithBarnas & Associates, Inc. opened its door for business in 2005.
Megan was born in the United Kingdom and immigrated to the USA in 1964. She is now a U.S. citizens as well as spouse of a retired member of the United States Air Force. Megan obtained an undergraduate degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland and then a Masters in Public Administration degree from Valdosta State University. She has achieved recognition as a Senior Professional in Human Resource Management through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI), which is a partner of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).
Megan started working in HR in 1978 as an HR Manager of a small Valdosta manufacturing company. She has worked with both private and non-profit organizations, such as the Army/Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) as a Regional HR Manager, Federal Women’s Program Manager, and the Georgia Department of Labor as a Title under the Title III Program Coordinator. During her years in private industry, Megan has successfully worked at all levels of the corporation with a variety of industries. Megan has also taught HR certification courses for SHRM through Valdosta State University Continuing Education department. Megan has taught business management and human resource management courses at two, four and six year colleges. Having a history heavy in regulatory compliance, Megan enjoys following the attempts of our federal and state legislators to develop and pass new legislation. She equally follows the activities of our government agencies with their endeavors to further regulate businesses. Megan then turns this knowledge into handbook, policy, procedure and process activities as well as training programs, conducting HR specific audits and due diligence activities.
Megan is an active member of the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce. In the past, she has served on the Drugs Don’t Work and World Class Employee/Employer Committees. Currently she is serving on the Board of Directors, is a member of the Executive Government Affairs Committee and chairs the Business & Industry Policies Committee. Megan is an active member of the South Georgia/Valdosta Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). In this organization, she has held the positions of Chapter President, Program Chair, and now past president. She also serves on the Board as Government Affairs Committee Chair.
Megan and her husband, Retired Master Sergeant John L. C. Smith, married in 1962. They are proud to have called Valdosta home since 1964.
